As the UK economy is hot newsexpected to remain sluggish in the next few years, the British government is promoting private investment to help fund new infrastructure, especially in growing industries such as AI.
The investment was first announced at a summit hosted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday. The investment will allow Microsoft to more than double its data center in the UK, play a role in the new AI model and provide key infrastructure.
"Today's announcement is a turning point in the future artificial intelligence infrastructure and development in Britain," Sunak said in a statement on Thursday.
Although Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, said in April that the British antitrust authorities made a decision against Microsoft, which put Microsoft's confidence in the British technology industry in crisis. But Microsoft finally made an investment decision.
Since then in April, British regulators have approved Microsoft's acquisition plan of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, bringing Britain back to a favorable situation for Microsoft.
"As a company, Microsoft is committed to ensuring that Britain has the world's leading artificial intelligence infrastructure," said Smith, president of Microsoft, when he received Jeremy Hunt, British Finance Minister, at a data center under construction in London.
The project agreed on Thursday also includes a training program to ensure that Britain has the skills needed to build and work with AI.
